It can modulate the capacity from 10 to 100 percent. The compressor features the Copeland Scroll Digital Compressor controller that controls the time that the compressor is in a loaded state vs. unloaded state. Typically, the compressor turns off and on via a thermostat or other controller, but with a digital compressor a third question needs to be answered: the amount of the required capacity. “That is not an on/off proposition,” says Powelson, “Now, you are looking for a value, ‘would you like the compressor to run at 10 percent capacity or 100 percent capacity or any number in between.’” HVAC units typically have a system controller. The system controller provides an input signal to the Copeland controller that ranges from 0V to 5V proportional DC signal. The signal will be used to correlate to capacity control. “At less than 1V, the controller reads that to mean a call for zero capacity,” he says. “At 1V, that translates to a call for 10 percent capacity and as you ramp up that signal from the 1V up to a 5V, we use that to proportionally ramp up from 10 percent to 100 capacity.”

Energy savings with variable-speed compressors can be found in both the evaporator and the condenser components. For the evaporator, the variable-speed compressor uses the entire evaporator even during part load. A single-speed compressor always runs with full load on the evaporator and because of that the evaporating temperature is higher for a variable-speed compressor. “In variable-speed applications, you are running with a lower load which means you are utilizing the complete capacity of your coil,” he says. With a low load, he says that the compressor can operate at a higher temperature, unlike a fixed speed, in which even at low loads the compressor is running at full capacity. When coupled with variable-speed on the condenser, greater savings can be achieved. In a situation where there is a 50 percent load demand, average fan power consumption with variable speed on the condenser will be decreased by a factor of four over single speed with only on/off fan control, Rasmussen says. There are some scenarios in which more capacity is needed than can be supplied by one compressor. In those instances, Rasmussen suggests going to a hybrid approach that combines a variable-speed compressor with a fixed-capacity compressor.
